Goby species

I want to get a goby/pistol shrimp pair, but I am wondering whether the different goby species have different personalities. Are some more shy than others?

I'd like it if the goby is not hiding out 100% of the time.

my personal experience is all gobies have different personalities onto them selves but watchmangobies (yellow) and wheelers seem to be out more but aurora(?) are timid not sure on others

My yasha hase and his candy stripe pistol are almost alway out. I think a good part on their shyness is dependent on tank mates.

I'll bet you're right on this one. Since I plan on having mainly a coral tank, with the goby/shrimp planned to be the only other inhabitants, perhaps shyness won't be too much of an issue.

our LFS has a small red sea tank they keep all there pistol gobie combos. the orange stripe prawn goby and the hi fin red gobie seem like there always out with lots of traffic past the tank. i like the hi fin of the orange stripe, plus the shrimp looks like a little steam shovel constantly moving sand out. they keep sea horses in that tank to and all get along.

I have two pairs in my tank and from the get go my Randall's goby and tiger pistol were out and visible all the time. My YWG and candy cane pistol were quite a bit more shy at first but for the last month or so are out quite a bit more.

Like saltwaterfishlover said, I think you will find gobies individually (and all fish for that matter) can have their own personalities that may be completely different than what the 'norm' is for that species. I also wouldn't be too surprised if they disappear for a while at first, but give them time and I'm sure you will see them. My YWG and candy cane went underground for over a month before finally popping back up.
