Going Fallow

Do you have corals and inverts remaining in the DT during this process?

I have a fowlr with no inverts. You can leave the inverts and corals in the display, but any time you add something new whether it be live rock, a coral or an invert, etc., the clock starts over if those things haven't been quarantined.

I'm in your shoes right now and I'm doing a minimum of 9 weeks fallow. I may do 12 just to be safe.

+1 Good advice.

Also, with regards to LA DD specimens, I would interpret knowing that they deworm all their specimens as something that just buys you more time. So, you have the option of using copper first, Prazi second if you suspect external parasites are the more pressing issue.

It's always a good idea to treat with two rounds of PraziPro yourself, as it is such "gentle" medication. Prazi doesn't stay active in the water long, so you can treat with that first and then move on to copper. Or as mentioned above, vice versa. But if you do treat with copper first, run carbon or a Poly-Filter to remove the copper before you treat with Prazi. You can mix the two, and I have, but supposedly the presence of copper cuts down Prazi's effectiveness.

I think it would be safe to add corals from an aquaculture facility that have no fish mixed into the system during the fallow period. Has anyone done this???

Don't trust LA DD or anyone for that matter. I got fish from them that were ich free and some that were not. You still need to quarantine all fish. I still treat all fish with prazipro regardless and treat other symptoms as they arise. We have all been where you are. Good Luck.

I really don't think its a matter of trust. Fish quarantining is a very time-intensive process; IF DD quarantined like we do, fish prices would skyrocket. I trust only myself and a friend/helper to properly quarantine . I think its our job, not the dealers. Even DD tells us to use a QT on their fish.

I don't fully understand the logic behind this, but snorvich says any coral/invert isolated for 3 days is safe to put in your DT. I have an invert/frag QT setup for just this purpose. No fish ever goes in there. I guess 3 days isolated away from a (fish) host is enough time for any potential "hitchhikers" to die because they'd have to be in the theront stage.

Of course, protecting your reef from "other" hitchhikers such flatworms, nudibranchs, bristleworms, etc. is a whole different animal. I use a coral dip for that.

I wouldnt do it unless you know personally it was a strict no-fish tank. I'd hate for you to wait 9 weeks, then find out you still got ich because you added corals.

I would add all the corals now, then start your 9 week timer. Be safe than sorry.

I hear ya... i'm gonna order (corals) exclusively from LA Diver's Den... their systems are completely isolated. Little more expensive but worth the piece of mind

Bought a 5in blue hippo tang from a lfs that runs copper. Fish was there for a month and a half and no signs of disease. Been in my tank for 2 weeks now after 8 weeks fallow ( I know... I couldn't wait any longer ). I also purchased a uv during the fallow period. No ich so far! Not even a spec!

No LFS runs copper at the strength that can kill ich.

Did you quarantine the hippo and performed prophylactic treatments?

No I did not QT. The fish was at the LFS for 8 weeks in a 20 gal cube. IMO I felt it was ok to add to my DT tank. The fish had lost some weight. I've already fattened it up in 2 weeks.
