Going to Cozumel

Hey guys, I'm going to Cozumel next july and I was wondering if anyone has any experiences and opinions.

I've never dove before. The only thing I have going for me is that I love the water and know how to swim. I'm planning on taking a scuba and snorkling lessons this summer. I will be going with a guide because I don't know the area and I probably won't be licensed by then. I could also take lessons there at the resort.

What do you guys think?

I just got back from Cozumel. I'm certified, my wife is not. I would recommend getting certified at all costs before you go.

You won't be able to dive alone even if you are certified in most areas there. The reefs of Cozumel are a national park in which you must pay a fee to even enter. You also have to be with a Dive Master to my knowledge.

You can take a 2 hour resort course at most scuba shops there which allow you to go on one or two dives with only that shop.

I dove with Aqua Safari. Things went smoothly, except my wife took the resort course and I was less than impressed. I've heard good things about Dive with Martin also, and they have better prices, Aqua Safari just happened to be attached to my resort.

good luck.

We use Del Mar Aquatics. You do not have to be with a Dive Master to dive. Yes you do have to pay the park fee (which is anywhere pretty much nowadays) I agree with dcombs44 about getting certified before going. Cozumel has some really great diving, since the Palanacar Reef is so close. Sea life is very abundant. I've seen sharks, huge eagle rays, large sea turtle's, and so much more than I can list. Have fun and dive safely.

I was thinking of taking a courses here because I want to be able to enjoy the diving rather than being nervous or figity with the equipment. I'm sure a 2 hour course wouldn't be enough to get me used to having all that equiment straped to me. There are some good places here to get certified so I think I'll give it a try.

Get certified at home and log some dive time as well. Cozumel has strong currents and occasional upwellings that can make diving tricky. It's definitely a place you want to be comfortable with your diving before you go.
