and my question is--how is the snorkeling in the St. Pete/ Clearwater area? I was there a couple years ago and didn't snorkel but I hear they do have some snorkel spots; I'm curious where they are and what you may see...i know there's no actual reef but I've heard of reef fish traveling up the coast during the summer (as far north as Pensacola I've heard of Queen Angels) thanks...

no snorkeling around here. Diving is a much better option. I guess crystal river but I thought that's more of a winter thing with the manatees.

None, absolultely none? They mention snorkeling on an ercursion to ruins at egmont key--what kind of sealife is around there, any clue?

water in tampa is pretty nasty, but i'm sure you could find some rocks and pilings to snorkel around.

best bet in that "area" would be the springs. they are very cool even without manatees.

It depends on what your expectations are. If they are low, you may enjoy yourself. There are lots of tropicals in the summer and fall, around inlets, seawalls, bridge pilings, etc. Visibility is variable, but some areas can be reasonably ok. Unfortunately, a great many areas, like Point 'o Rocks near Sarasota, are impossible to get to because every inch of beach is private. Still, some of the seawalls, docks, bridges and debris fields just inside the bay, from Venice up to Indian Rocks can be snorkeled if you are very careful and follow any regulations that may exist. Looking down from adjacent bridges gives a good idea about clarity. Beware of boat traffic. There is not much to see, but cover and food sources will attract small fish. I would certainly not go to that area just to snorkel, but if other business takes me there at the right time of year, I will probably bring snorkeling gear.

What about the ruins around egmont key--any tropicals there...we aren't staying in the bay, hopefully at Indian Shores...

The Rainbow River would be a great snorkeling drift trip that will take you about 1.5 hours to do. I was there and dove it in November.

Yep, it's amazing to see all the sand boils where the spring below the river boils up through the river bed. There is also an abundance of wildlife to see in the crystal clear waters.

Hell, you are practically half way through the state. I'd just take a mini trip down to the Keys!! I'm sure there's a lot more there for you to see than around the Tampa area.

If your in the tampa area check out howard park, around the bridges. Otherwise point of rocks in Sarasota is great. What ever you do make sure you go early in the morning if you want clear water.

Discovery Cove--LOL...I already nixxed the Disney trip for us and four kids (all teens) Just too much dinero, especially after renting a penthouse condo on the beach)...I may consider a road trip down to the reefs of South Florida (after all I am spending over $600 to rent a van for a week, may as well use it) or i can just hold my breath till next year when only my wife and i will be heading down to Riveria maya....
