Hi, Everyone I'm new to saltwater. Have had 55 gallon freshwater for over 10 years, Done community, Cichlid tanks and have always wanted to do saltwater. I am buying a 120 Gallon Established set up for $1000. Will be moving it hopefully this weekend, weather permitting. I have no idea how much time I have spent on this forum as a guest and learned a lot. THANK YOU ALL This has been an invaluable resource for information. 2 years ago I almost did saltwater and probably spent a month reading all about it here. Bought a house instead but now it is time to move to a real fish tank.

This is what I am Getting:

Oak 2 Door Stand
120g drilled tank
40g sump
Return pump
2 Rena Smart Heaters
Coralife 48" 2 150W HQI and 2 PC lighting system
Marineland LED light for refugium in sump
Reef Octopus in sump 160 Protein Super Skimmer
4 Koralia pumps
Approx 150lbs live rock
40lbs + live sand
Various soft corals, mushrooms, carpet anemone, etc.
Valentini Puffer
Copperband Butterfly
Yellow Tang
Large Hippo Tang
Mated Pair Maroon Clowns
and more...

The tank has been running for about 2 years and most of it came from a 90 gallon he upgraded from. It is a regular 120 gal. , so only 4 foot long so yes I know some of the fish may not be best for this tank the two tangs in particular, and probably the Copperband Butterfly. Although he said the Butterfly has been in there over a year and never messed with his corals or anything. I was working on planning a brand new setup and this is close to wjat I wanted equipment wise. Reef Octopus 160, Probably would have went with a T5 fixture but will be fine with Coralife 48" 2 150W HQI and 2 PC lighting system. I was planning to do a 75 gallon to start. This will sit a little far from the wall in the basement wall. My ideal tank would be a 6ft long 125 or 150 and will go to that eventually. That way it is not as deep and would save foot in space. (120 is drilled out back for those wonder why it woudl save a whole foot and not 6 inches).

Couple of questions:

Planning the move looking at using my 55 gallon freshwater tank to mix up 50 or so gallons of saltwater before the move. I will need every bucket and tube I got, plus buying more to move hopefully all the water the tank has now. My questions is The 55 gallon was 5 years old when I bought it so don't know if it was every treated for ICH and could have copper in it. I will be cleaning it out there will be nothing left in the just what copper could be in the silicone. Is there a way to test for copper since it would be a very small amount. If it has copper would it hurt if water is just gonna sit in it for less then a day?

Other question is any recommendations on what type of RO/DI unit to buy? In there near term will be buying water from LFS, luckily not far from my house but will get old quick. What should I look for in a RO/DI unit and how many GPD should i look for?

THANK YOU,

Kale

[welcome]

The tank could be cleaned with some vinegar to remove copper. It won't have any marine ich in it.

There are a number of vendors of RO/DI equipment here. I would look for a 75 gpd membrane with two prefilter stages and a DI phase afterwards for most people. What's your tapwater like? Is it from a well, or does it have a lot of calcium or magnesium?

You could always buy a large trash can for the water changes. Beats having to figure out if the FW tank has had copper in it. The only fish I'm slightly concerned about is the copperhead butterfly. Everything I've heard has told me they are pretty sensitive.

Excellent buy! It sounds like you will have a pretty mature tank with great equipment, rock, and livestock included. You have quite the project ahead :)

I moved the tank I have now from a previous reefer. It all was moved in coolers and rubber maid tubs. I ended up leaving the fish, rock, and coral in the cooler for longer than I had hoped (2 days) and noticed the pH dropped way down (6.7). Probably from it having a limited light source. Just a heads up as you are transferring your new tank. Good luck with the move!

Agreed on the vinegar.

As far as the RO/DI unit, you can't go wrong with the Bulk Reef Supply units.

Glad to see someone new getting into the hobby...Hope you enjoy it as much as we all do!

Thanks for the advice, I will be using a Rubbermaid for a mixing tub but want to have a lot of water on hand for the move so figured fill mixing tub with RO water and mix up about 50 gallons of saltwater in the old tank and get it up to 80 degrees before I get the new tank, that way what ever water doesn't make the move can be replaced quickly. after the move I am going to sell the 55 gallon tank.

I decided to I would use the old 55 gallon for this and clean it with vinegar. will run a filter on with Poly just to be safe. I am picking up the new tank this Friday.
