Gold Striped Maroon Clown

I have a gold striped maroon clown. He was hosting an anemone but the anemone died. I got everything stable in my tank but I do not want to put another anemone in my tank. I would like to put another clown in there. Right now there is a cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp, emerald crab and purple tang with the clown. I was told by my LFS that I have to get a clown that is way bigger than the one I have because he would bully the newer clown. Is this true? Would I be better off not getting another clown or trying my luck with a clown of the same size?

Thanks

Tom

No, no, exactly the opposite. Maroons are usually more difficult than other clowns because they tend to be more agressive towards a newcommer. If that LFS gave you such incorrect advice, I would be leery. Good luck : )
I will direct you-
Info on pairing is located in a sticky at the top of this forum.

Wow, thanks, I read the whole thing and it actually made sense to me. Thanks for the link.

There was a thread here not that long ago, this person paired thier large female maroon. They used a bottle (from water) submerged as a place for the new jevinelle to hide if it was attacked. The new juvinelle could retreat into the bottle but the large female could not. Someone may remember who it was and may look it up for you, I am out the door, going out of town. Just make sure the new fish has a place to hide in case it is bullied. I had a maroon pairing end with the female klling the male. Don't let all this discourage you, you may not succeed with the first fish you introduce, it will be well worth it in the end, maroons are so beautiful in pairs. Follow the instruction and introduce slowly over the corse of a couple days and remove promptly if it is getting beat up. Good luck : )

Using a bottle dosnt seem like a bad idea but I would be afraid of the juvinile just swimming round the tank trying to hide in the rock work before going into the bottle. I think I am going to try a small cage first and see how that turns out.

I used a specimen container with holes drilled in it. The resident clown tried to attack the new fish for a few hours and then seemed to lose interest. When I thought it was safe, about 6 hours later, I gave the new fish his freedom. He was rewarded with a few hours of extreme aggression for the old fish. Then the new fish seemed to have all he could take and started beating up on the old one. This lasted a few hours and now they get along great and I can't even tell which one was old and which one was new.

What ever you use, if you use anykind of container at all, introduce the smaller clown in the container, that way it knows it can retreat into it for safety. It was just an idea someone else had on this site, it worked for them. If you have lots of rockwork w/caves and hiding places, a container is not nessessary.
