Currently looking at getting a golden angelfish for my 180 gallon mixed reef tank. The fish appears to be eating mysis and brine shrimp pretty well.
How reef safe is this guy?
Also what is considered a fair price to pay for one?
Usually not reef safe, and also hard to maintain in aquariums
Most likely your zoanthids. Correction. He almost certainly will devour all your zoanthids. If you don't have any or don't really care about the ones you do have, he should be fine as long as you know he also might nip and clams, oysters, scallops, feather dusters, and stuff like that (feather dusters are the only real concern out of those things). I only keep Anglefish in my non reef tank because while I love them i don't want them destroying all my zoanthids. I have tons and do not want to give them up. So if you don't have zoanthids and/or feather dusters, you're good. Also, it's not garunteed that they wil eat those things, but they're like butterfly fish; they probably will.
I always knew where mine was hiding because of the partially eaten SPS. I read an article somewhere on how they are caught and it said divers look for a small area of dead coral and normally find one. They are beautiful fish, mine only bothered SPS. I would probably still have mine but my male Flame Angel hated him so it wasn't fair to keep him in such danger.
I've been keeping Golden Angels for the past 15 years. I haven't had one that was overly destructive, and zoanthids are definitely not in peril.
This is an extremely shy and reclusive fish. You need lots of healthy established rock for this fish to live in. They almost never come out to feed. I've had several different Goldens over the years, and kept them in pairs. It's not uncommon to not see this fish for months at a time.
Mine recently photobombed a photo and I hadn't had a glimpse of him in probably 6 months.
