Golden Pufferfish

Do it, they are awesome fish. There was just one on DD, I've seen them more often lately. Our wholesaler still has two available.

Beautiful CI golden! Glad he's doing well.

And yes, CI and Hawaii have the brightest color golden puffers. Central American ones tend to be a motted yellow. I have a Hawaiian and a Mexican one in my tank. Just check my thread for a video on my 375g to compare the difference.

Slight bump in the road. Now on 2 1/2 weeks cupramine and I can't get the golden to eat. It's been 3 days since I last saw him eat. Wont even touch clams, just swims up and down along the sides of the tote. Any advice? Is it normal? On a lighter note, the more finicky and larger of the two regals is starting to eat well....

What dosage is the cupramine at? Puffers do not tolerate copper well and I wouldn't use anything over 0.35ppm (the lowest effective dosage for ich).

I've had him at .4. I dont go as strong as seachem recommends. But, good to know. I'll move him to a separate qt and lower dosage. Hopefully he'll perk up.

I am surprised that he stopped eating at 0.4ppm. Are you sure you read the right color on the test kit? If it's a Seachem test kit I would be a little wary of the reading as I can never distinguish between the different shades of color. I do better with the salifert one.

API and seachem are all the shop carries, which sucks, but I guess I just make do. I figure I'm dosing 20g, which at .5ppm is 64 drops, 13~ (12.8) drops per .1ppm. I get a shade lighter than .5, and call it a day. I've done 5 six week QTs and it seems to have worked thus far. Salifert you say? I'm going to need more test solution, I think I'll give it a try. I'm ordering some new lights for the tank, hopefully they haven't shipped yet....

If not the Cu, what else do you think it could be? No one bothers him, and all he has been fed is frozen mysis, clam and mega-marine angel from the regals...

Other's experience may be different, but in mine: DO NOT put them with smaller fish. I ignored nips in fins a couple times. I leave town for two days, get a call from my girlfriend, and turns out the puffer isn't as "docile" as I thought. By the time i came back he had eaten a juv flagfin, juv imperator and MD clown wrasse. Also pestered the heck out of my HT and regals.

This situation is just plain rotten. I come home to what looks like an empty tank, whats left is too scared to come out. Back to the drawing board. I'm almost sure I have a new home for him, but if it falls through: anyone looking for a CI golden PM me, I guess. What a bummer...

Wow! That is very disappointing to hear. I have never kept large puffers with small fish so I wouldn't know what they would do to small fish. However, I had a 6" guinea fowl puffer bite a small firefish in half in the QT (the firefish swam through the divider I assumed).

What a pity... maybe try a dogface puffer instead? It doesn't get as big and is much more docile than Arothron Meleagris.

Haven't met a trigger or a puffer I like, which sucks. Trigger's intelligence amazes me and puffers are, well, puffers haha. I'm not going to try another puffer, they'll probably make the "not for me list".

I considered setting up a 120 and keeping him by himself for awhile, but between the cost of restocking my tank and current "builds in progress" I just cant. This was definitely a set back. Doesn't look like the HT is going to make it either. Probably the hardiest and most aggressive eater I've ever had. Shouldn't of gotten rid of my Blueface, he would of put the puffer in check :)

I had a couple people PM me about him. He's a great fish that belongs with other big fish. He eats, swims, and interacts with you just like a puffer. Fearless when my hands are in the tank, and always inspecting my work. I've actually had to move him out of the way a couple times cause he was blocking my view. My girlfriend says it's the most "pet like" fish I've ever had.

Might get one day really cool fish the problem is there big as soon as you get them will probably go with a dogface instead for my new tank but might add one down the road I want to get all the fish for my new tank as babies and let them grow
