Golden Pygmy Angel

What a beautiful fish! How long have you had him? Does he look that beautiful in person? Does he bother your corals?

All the pygmy angel can and will pick on corals, it just a matter of when and what coral. Golden angels are very shy and most will hide in the tank for long periods of time.

Peter Schmiedel - Thanks, this is what I though but I was not sure if anyone out there had any experiences with them. I am very tempted to try and find a mate for him/her but at the same time I do not want the fish to fight until one of them is dead.

Chihuahua6 - It is a great fish and looks just as good in person, the colors on the fish are a very deep gold and red. I have had him/her since Jan of 2000. It's a great fish. The fish also gets along very well with my other fish.

marrone- "All the pygmy angel can and will pick on corals, it just a matter of when and what coral."

This is a very broad statement and I disagree totally, unless you have proof of every pygmy angel eating corals why would you post such a negative comment? If you have had a Golden then please post your experience. I had an Imperator (Red Sea) in my tankf or 5 years until I had to give him away b/c he out grew my 180. A friend now has him in a 500 all SPS tank and this fish also has never touched any SPS.

"Golden angels are very shy and most will hide in the tank for long periods of time."

This is true they do spend some of their time in the rock. However this is b/c they are looking for sponge to munch on. The key to keeping any angel from picking at coral is to keep them well feed so they do not move to corals; or revert back to that behavior.

I have a dozen athias so I feed many times a day thus keep the angel very happy, and fat I might add. My golden is in an SPS tank and has never touched any of the 25+ pieces in my tank. This also goes for zoo's.

Keith

I suggest that you look at all the threads, here on RC and other places, about not only pygmy angels but larger angels for proof that at any given time an angel may all of a sudden start to pick at a coral, reguardless on how well feed it is. As far a it being a negative comment it's not, it's a fact and some thing that people should take into account when get a pygmy angel. To not take that into account and let people know about this is completely wrong. People need to know that this can happen and be prepared for it.

If I have either had or have had friends that have had these angels and I'm posting from my expriecnce, which you don't seem to like because it doesn't match yours.

Keith,

if you want to buddy them up, better not have one already in the foreseen tank. So that he can not establish is territory! Best practise for Centropyge is to get fish in different size or two very very small ones and add them together in the desired tank.

Peter Schmiedel- I would agree, to late now though the one I have now would most likley not be happy with another showing up out of the blue.

marrone -

It's a negative comment b/c what you stated had nothing to do with what I was asking. I don't beleive in making broad generalized statments on every varitation of a fish in a given species, so I asked for detail from you. As well many Angels are known to do very well in reefs including swallowtails, Lamarck's, Regal's, Red Sea Zebra's, Watanabe's, Flame's, Potter's, etc.

"If I have either had or have had friends that have had these angels and I'm posting from my expriecnce, which you don't seem to like because it doesn't match yours."

This is not true if you had said "I have had a golden and after a few years it went nuts on my SPS" I would have listened totally and probably asked you a few questions. This is why I asked you if you have ever had one?

However going back to my first point, what you wrote had nothing to do with the question I had asked in the begining of this thread- "Does anyone know the difference or how to tell a male from a female? I am trying to figure out which one I have."

The point of all of the threads on RC is to offer experiences of other fellow reefers so we can all learn from them, if you had experience with every Angel I would listen to your statment and asked you for more detail on Golden's.

If you have read every thread on RC then you would also know there are exceptions to every rule, especially with fish. Many say no to Angels in reefs, others have success, to each their own (same thing with my Golden and your opinion on not keeping Angels in reefs).

Case in point I had a desjardini tang for 2 years and one day out of now where it started to pick and pull at my zoo's then started to do the same on my SPS. Now everyone will say Tangs are reef safe but there is an exception to the rule it seems in this case with my desjardini. Just like there seems to be an exception to your rule of "All the pygmy angel can and will pick on corals, it just a matter of when and what coral."

So my point with you is that just b/c it has happened one way for one person does not mean it will happen that way EVERY time for others.

I think marrone's comment was more in response to Chihuahua6's question.

I think you need to learn and read other people posts, because like SDguy said I was responsing to Chihuahua6's question and not yours.

People need to be made aware of what "can happen" and not "well it doesn't alway happen so you can't say that it will" kind of reponses. This just lead to people getting fish, coral or inverts and then having problems down the line.

As for making board generalized statments about angels I think you need to come out of your fanasty world and realize what can and does happen. Maybe we should just leave info here on RC like it is on most of the on-line place, that sell fish, corals and inverts, and that have wrong info about size, tank requirements and other things.

Like I said before I have either had or know people that have had these angels and that's where my exprecience is coming from in my posts. You don't like it because it doesn't match yours but then again you missed the whole point of my post.

That's what I mean so you do know people that have had experiences with Golden, excellent! I thought when you said "If I have either had or have had friends that have had these angels" that you didn't know any one that has had them. I'm not tying to be negative with you, believe it or not, just trying to make my point as you are as well.

So what where their experiences, Like I said I have had this fish for a while and have yet to have a problem with him. Do you know if they had probelms when they were younger or older? As well I am not sure but I think my Black Tang and him may have an "issue" from time to time, but only in th epast year; let me know if you can get feedback from any one that has had them.

Keith
