Goldfish Cam
It's been said politicians live in a fishbowl. So that's where we've put the five candidates for Maine governor, well sort of. We quizzed Baldacci, Woodcock, Merrill, LaMarche and Napier on the Androscoggin River and what they'd do to improve it. Then we put five goldfish named after each candidate in a tank of Androscoggin River water to see how they'll fare.

Click here to see updated photos of the fish as and read what the candidates have to say about their plans to clean up the Androscoggin River.

I hope they checked with DIF&W. This also reminded me of the discussion on Koi and gold fish we had yesterday.:D

Not me, The Sun Journal paper. I not sure I would go near that
part of the river. I think I recall a couple of Steven King novels
about the effect of polluted water. I hope they don't start growing
out of control like happens in a lot of 1950's scifi movies.

Oh, I was under the impression you were part of the experiement:)
and Leave it to SK to come up with something like that...makes you sort of think.
Anyway, I do think this is cruel to the poor fishies, but I feel for the native fish who have to live in the river regaurdless. Thanks for sharing

Yeah, no kidding..maybe they should have used white clouds... oh yeah.. they are illegal...

And keep an eye on Lil John, he already grew a moustache, if he grows whiskers, he should be considered very harmful. He should not be allowed in our state, considered a menice to society and a threat to the general well being of Mainers... he's an exotic, a foreigner, not from around here ... be sure to call the game wardens :mixed:

I had no idea white clouds were illegal in Maine! that would explain why I can never find any at the LFS

Not to derail ...
While on vacation last week in West Virginia, I stopped in a few stores, including the nicest PetCo I've been in. A few things I saw for sale: piranhas, blue crayfish, Jack Dempseys, a few diffferent colored red parrots (hybrid version), white clouds, clawed frogs, ghost shrimp, koi, channel catfish, and various reptiles, amphibians, and stinging insects. Was really tempted to bring some stuff back with me.

Just goes to show how out of it Maine really is! I hate 'big brother' trying to tell me how to live my life! Grrrrrrr.......!! A real shame our state has to practice such narrow minded protectionism. Wish it would have extended to the woolen mills and shoe shops and other manufacturing businesses that offered so many Mainers jobs. Guess to the powers that be in Maine, salmon are more to be protected than the people. Mixed up priorities to my way of thinking. I'll get off my soap box now and get to work. Sue

Since we have been a bit derailed, Marko Melendy commented that one reason ME was really strict on what comes in the state is due to the fish industry, it sounded like the fish we export for food as well.... would be worth a night of discussion over a beer or two

Like there is no fishing industry in Massachusetts!!? IMHO, Maine just trys too hard. It's almost paranoid. Maybe the winters are too long and the polititions have nothing else better to do. Sue

If the goldfish survive in Androscoggin River water, thengoldfish should be added to the banned list. If they can survive that they must be a highly adaptable and invasive species.
