the other day i was given a fairly large goniopora as a gift. i added it to the tank 2 days ago and the polyps havent even come out of the exoskeleton yet. ill attach a picture later if it will help.
has anyone had this problem before?
is this normal for goniopora?
how long might i expect to wait before seeing any kind of polyp extension at all?
im very worried..
i tried moving it from a spot on my liverock to a lower flow area on the sandbed this morning. might that help?

I don't own one.....but I love them! So I've done plenty research.....from what I have gathered your best shot is an aquacultured piece of Goni. And find a set of parameters that work and do your best to maintain it!!

Everyone that has successfully kept one says you need to dose iron. Of course you cant really test for iron as it sinks . But yea they really like iron for some reason. AND ALSO I hear t hey do well in tanks with syringodium filifoma ( manatee grass)

I have been able to keep one for about 7 months. It was incredible. Always open and then one day started to recede a little...then a little the next day and so on. Upon the demise, I started doing the research I should have done before buying it. Turns out, they are deemed extremely hard to keep in captivity with low success rates. As Benjamin pointed out, folks have done well with iron supplementing. These seem more like a rent-a-coral to me than anything,as you never know how long it sat at the LFS before it made it's way to your tank.

Good luck...hope it works out.

thanks guys..ive been doing research and i might try iron dosing. i moved it down to the sandbed this morning and when i got home from work the night lights were on and the polyps were extended more than theyve been since i bought it. ill have to see how it looks in the day time and see if i cant keep it healthy

I have two different types of Goni. Red Goni and a Neon Green Goni. I've never fed my goni, not once. I give them lower-medium light with indirect water flow. I'd like to get some purple Goni next.
