gonipora polyp extension

Sounds good..on getting another pic. Ok, just a few more questions for ya! ;)

Water change schedule sounds very good...are you using RO/DI?

I have a 60 gal cube, sumpless, skimmerless, and as far as flow I have a Korallia 1 and 2, and a Korallia Nano, plus a canister filter return (at 350 gph) but the powerheads are all on a wavemaker timer...otherwise it might be too much flow IMO for my little goni.

So it sounds like you have a tremendous about of flow for a 29 gallon tank with a mag 7 and two K1's going. And how far above the tank is your 400w MH? That seems like alot of light for that size tank (unless it's high above the tank)? Do you have mostly SPS corals, the reason for the high flow/high lights? And how recently is "recent" on changing the bulb?

The coral hasn't been expanding in the past 6-7 weeks, correct? Is that when you changed your bulb? It could be that it's being blasted with too much light and the flow should be like "a breeze blowing wheat in a field."

Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure we haven't overlooked anything.

Here's a pic of my tank so you can see where mine is located and how it's mounted. The skeletal base is about the size of a golfball if that helps in reference to the polyp extension.

yes i have an ro/ di, and yeh the bulb is about 14 in off the tank, ive been slowly making the switch to sps, upgrading stuff, but for now its still a mixed reef, yeh i changed the bulb about 2 weeks ago, the reson for moving it was not that it was lookin sickly or anything i justwanted more polyp extenision than i already have,so i thought the reson for it not expanding more was because of the to much flow/light issue, ive seen goni with super long polyps and in sps tanks b4, my goni is the same shape size as urs and about the same spot in my tank.front right corner

From the pics you've posted so far, if that's all the PE you're getting, then you have a "sickly" goni on your hands. Especially if it's been like that for 6+/- weeks. Polyp withdrawal for extended periods of time are some of the symptoms prior to the death of a goni. That's not to say it's condition can't be turned around....IT CAN! :)

The flow was probably too much for it where is was, it wasn't able to capture any food, it wasn't being target fed, and then it was blasted with a new light bulb (all good reasons for it to stay closed up and not fully expanded).

You are right, I too have seen pics of red goni's in SPS dominated tanks, but being an LPS coral, I think they are in areas of and prefer slightly lower flow.

You've probably done the best thing in moving it for now. Just watch the expanding tissue around the bottom of the coral to make sure the sand isn't irritating it. As it grows, you will have to get it up out of the sand and onto a rock as it encrusts to prevent infection.

Here is one of the prettiest red goni's I have seen from "Rick" in Portland Oregon who is here on Reef Central. It's 5yrs old in a mostly SPS dominated tank. (sorry that's the best photo credit I can give, as that's all I know; maybe he'll chime here if he sees the thread)
