Gonodactylellus caldwelli

Yes it was named after him by a student who found it. I believe he said it was considered rude to name an animal after yourself.

yeah i think i remember him mentioning that too... it's like an unwritten rule of the science community. one guy Raoul Serenea took a lot of stomatopod pics (i think) so Dr Roy named a species after him.
 
a species? If that is true, he named the entire genus after him :D Are you sure his name wasn't komaii something or something komaii?

I first collected and photographed this species from the reef crest at Lizard Island in the 1980's. A decade later, one of my students, Dr. Mark Erdmann, collected the same species in Indonesia. When he realized that it was undescribed and that I had collected it earlier, he named it after me. It is a beautiful stomatopod, but rare. We have collected fewer than a dozen.
