Good all purpose lens for Canon

I'm planning on buying a Canon Rebel XTi soon, but I'd like to just get the body and a nice lens (not the kit lens since most people say it's not that great).

Is there a good all purpose lens that someone can suggest?

I bought a Canon 30D in November and opted for the body only. The walk around lens I chose was the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 Image Stabilized USM. It is a great lens, but I'm not certain if I would make the same choice now that I know more. Let me emphasize, it is a great walk around lens. But at f4 it is a little slow. And at $485 it is a little pricey.

At the same time I bought my girlfriend a Rebel XT with the kit lens. The kit lens is fine for snap shots. Friends and family, capturing moments kind of thing. But the first time you see a side by side comparison of a tack sharp image from a fine lens next to it, disappointment really sets in.

I tryed to help you more by reading up on some popular lens choices, but I found that if you google "What is the best walk around lens for Canon DSLR" you will get lots of good information and you won't need me to give it to you second hand. Then once you've narrowed down your choices, ask for personal experiances from this group. Some are very knowledgable.

Hope I helped.

There are many good options for a "walk-around" lens for an XTi depending on your budget and what you need. I personally use the Canon EF 24-105 F/4L IS as my main walk-around lens but not everyone wants to spend $1K on a lens. Some cheaper options (sub $500) would be Canon EF 17-40 F/4L, Sigma 17-70 F/2.8-4.5, Sigma 18-50 F/2.8, Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8, Canon EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS (about $1K), and there are many more. You need to decide exactly what you need from a lens and make some choices from there. Do you want a constant aperture? Image stabilization? Full-time manual focus? Internal-focusing lens? I would try and pick up a used "kit" lens (they sell for like $50) and use it for a while to help you decide on what you are looking for in a new lens.
