Good camera for rookie, $300-$400

My canon A520 has stopped working... I don't know anything about manual setting on a camera but would like to learn somewhat. I'm looking for a somewhat compact camera that takes great pictures on the "auto" setting but that I can learn a bit about and maybe take even better pictures. Would prefer to spend around $300 but could be convnced to spend $400.

A Canon S5 IS could be had in that range. I was pretty happy with my old Canon S3, and the S5 looks even more promising.

I have the Canon G9, and I love it. it's a very powerful camera for its size. it's not as big and heavy like the DSLR, but give you the ability to shoot full manual just like the DSLR. IME, I think it's a good beginning camera for those who wants the small but full manual capability.

I think I'm just grabbing a point and shoot compact for now...and will spend a little more time researching a better quality camera and probably take a local class on photography to learn what I really need/like. Thanks for the input, I'm sure I'll be back in a month or two looking for advice when I learn a bit more
