Good community fish for an open-top tank...

Hi there.

[Let me preface this to say that this is merely to get ideas for my tank, it doesn't mean that I will get any suggested fish, or that any unsuggested fish will not be gotten...]

Now that that's out of the way,

I'm moving my bta and two clownfish to a 36g bowfront. Total water volume after rock and sump is probably somewhere around 40g of water.

I am looking to stock this lightly as i'll just be running a cpr bakpak 2 on it and it should be low-maintenance. This probably translates to "no big fish"

The sand bed is about 1.5" deep and lays on top of an egg-crate, so no sand burrowing animals will be considered.

I will eventually add a mandarin as they are my favorite fish. So whatever is added now must be compatible with my clownfish and a mandarinfish.

Ok, shoot ideas off if you've got 'em... All fish must be striking in appearance (no chromis, etc)

Thanks,
Angela

I think the general concensus is that 40g is not enough for a mandarin, unless you have one that eats prepared food.

I like my little yellow clown goby, though if you have more than one, I hear that they strip flesh off of SPS.

Hi Vince, I have experience with mandarinfish. I trained my last one to eat mysis and it did great in my 65g. I know it can be done, so i'm not asking about the fish here.

Anything that nips sps is not going in...

Hi sid,

Yes, actually i've decided to do Banggai cardinalfish.

I put the eggcrate under the sand for extra stability for the rock considering I didn't want a huge depth of sand.
