Good Evening Everyone, Im Hoping I Can Vent My Frustrations With You All.............

im really saddened because i have nobody to enjoy this magnificent hobby with down here in my area. i really love to keep sps and clams although the other day i had a really bad mishap in my reeftank and all my colonies of sps had started to Rtn/Stn/ bleach:sad1: i immediately tested my water and my alk was 16 and my calcium was 300:eek: i tested my calcium reactor effluent and it was 6.7 my ph showed 8.2 from my reefanatic controller. i been noticing my calcium reactor media has not been dissolving at all and in fact its growing little bits of brown diatoms on the inside of the reactor on the schuran media:confused: i have always wanted to keep sps alive and thriving because i just admire them and hope to one day be able to keep a monstrous sps tank with all the goodies that accompany it and to be able to watch them grow into beautiful colonies right before my eyes. i just cant seem to get this thing right:( dial it in and make sure my alk/calcium are where their supposed to be at. theres nobody down here in my neck of the woods thats into this stuff or are very busy doing there own thing that im left all alone to try and fend for myself and figure this thing out. i really wish everyday that somebody would move in right down the street from me who was a sps fanatic and knew how to do it all right and keep the alk/calcium. etc... all in good standing and that we met and i finally had somebody to guide me through this and not only to guide me through but to be my newfound reefer fanatic friend that knows how to grow his sps like crazy too and dial everything in on his tank without a problem and had the know how:( i get so frustrated that i try and try but i cant seem to get it right:( how i wish i could have a nice sps tank like everyone else on this board, thanx for letting me vent...and i hope my wish comes through someday/oneday soon:sad1:

I can totally sympathize---same thing happened to me a few weeks ago when I had the flu. Now I've sort of given up since I'm moving in 3 weeks and will have to break the tank down and come up again. Lost nearly all my acroporas...'cept one that has gone to colony form, and may therefore be a bit 'protected,' I can't otherwise account for its survival. High alk is a PITA with acroporas, I'm convinced. Seawater is 7.9, and that's going to be where I peg mine in my tank's next incarnation.

Tell you what---we both make another try at a lower alk level.

your effluent should be 6.3 or lower for that shurant media.don't give up.the main thing about sps the water have to be stable and had to be patience.sorry about your loss,Gl

Keep trying, you'll get it eventually, and it'll be 10x sweeter because of all the pain you've gone through. Just keep tweaking and testing, and everything will fall into place. :D

Doesn't Sang (Maximus) live near you? He's a reefing master, and can probably pinpoint the problem in a second. One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, too.

I tell you one thing that helped me a lot when I was going well, and when I stopped, I came a cropper---that is logging. When coming out of a crisis, test daily for alk and cal, temp, and also salinity--if you have any doubt of that param. WRITE DOWN the results in a log. That way you can see the trends as if they were graphed. Log your water changes. Log every change and addition. This way you become your own teacher. You can see relationships. I stopped doing this because things were going so well: then the holidays, then I got sick, then things went to hades in a handbasket because in my fevered sense of process I overdosed the tank. If I'd been logging tests and additives I'd have seen it.

I second what Unarce said. Maximus (Sang) lives out in your area and he's always willing to help out a fellow reefer.

I've made the almost 2 hour trip from the Bay Area just to chat with him about reefs a few times. You're lucky to live in Salinas so close to such a knowledgeable source of reefing information.

Try PMing him.
