Good Macro Lens for Canon DSLR

Does anyone use a Canon Digital Rebel SLR for taking macro shots of their coral? If so, I'm curious what lens(s) and setting you utilize for the best results.

Kinda curious what lenses would be on the high and low end of the scale as far as quality and price go.

i went for the Tamron 100mm myself, compared it to the canon 100, and found the tamron to be a bit clearer image. However, the reviews show that the Canon has much better glare reduction, but i have not had any issue with this abberation. If i had the money i would have liked to go with the 175 from Canon, but the tamron has worked wonders for me on a EOS Digital 6.2 MP. Check out the shots in the wallpapaers thread currently on last page.

Only recommendation is to stay away from the Digital format lenses put out by Canon, they are not interchangeable with anything other than a few of their DSLR's.

Cool...I am looking at the Canon 100 because I hear so many good things about it, but that kinda breaks the bank right now.

I am using a Canon 75-300 on my Rebel XT. It is pretty nice. I had bought the 75-200, and found it to be of a much lesser quality.

by the way, for top end, i think canon makes a 1.25:1 aspect ratio lens that fits Canon DSLR's that acts as a lens and magnifying tubes in one lens, giving an overall 25% INCREASE over actual size. THis lens retails for somewhere in the range of 2100-2400 dollars US.

before u purchase it... take your DSLR into the camera shop of your choice and take a few snaps with both Tamron and the Canon... that is all it took for me to see the difference in clarity, and made my mind up... i think the Tamron is about 20-30 less than the Canon.

Are you talking about the EF? How far away from your tank are you?

Congratulations if you got a copy that works well for you. That lens generally gets pretty awful reviews.

I have and recommend the Canon 100 2.8. I've heard good things about the Tamron as well.

There is a 75-200 and a 75-300 USM version. I bought both and am probably going to sell the 200. The USM is a higher quality version of the regular EF. I cannot focus closer than about 3.9', but at 300, it's good for me. I think that once you take into account distortions caused by the tank glass and the water, a good mid-class lens is more than adequate for the average guy. I admit, that if I wanted a strictly macro lens, (which I didn't), I would go with the EF 100 2.8. It's a nice lens, and more money.

Another vote for the EF 100 f2.8!

Since moving to the DSLR, I've taken 80+% of my tank pics with this lens.

Away from the aquarium, it's fast, sharp, and makes a high quality 100mm general purpose prime.

Canon 100 macro
Sigma 105 macro
Tamron 90 macro

All very very good. You can randomly pick one out of a bag and be very pleased with it. The Tamron is the sharpest of the lot though, but with the cheapest build (plastic).

I have the canon 100mm F/2.8 and love it. It's built like a brick and whisper silent. I couldn't be happier with it.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Just purchased my Canon 100mm f/2.8 and it'll be here tomorrow!!!!!
