Good old fashioned drilled overflow

Hi, in preparing for drilling my tank's overflows I discovered a few methods that I'd never heard of before. Bean animal etc. Does anyone still use the old way of just drilling 2 holes, putting some mesh over them and letting gravity do the rest?
What are the pros and cons compared to other methods?

Noise, reliability, capacity..
The "old" way can be quite noisy, unreliable and has a lower capacity

Basic maintenance should keep it reliable, it's 29g so capacity should be okay too. Just noise, but I can't tell yet if it's loud until it's too late.

I was aware of this method but very interesting read. Do you think there's a minimum tank size for this method?
My tank is only 29g so I want as much as possible outside the tank. I'm not sure that I want a full length weir either.
