Good practices before adding Live Rock to cycle?

Hey all just had a question about when you get Live Rock to cycle a tank..

What is the best thing (besides cooking) that you can do with a live rock quickly once you recieve it? Doing a high salinity dip/swish to get some crud/undesireables out?

What about an lugols iodine dip? Would that kill all the beneficial bacteria and such?

Thanks!

I don't think I would do an iodine dip. I don't think a salinity dip will do any good either. I think I saw earlier that a fresh water dip will get undesirables out of the rock. Crabs and the sort. I think you just need to do a fresh water dip, then scrub the heck out of it.

I personally have not done that with rock. I have always purchased cured rock.

I hope that helps a little.

Regards,

Pat

No when i bought my Rock i just cured it in the tank. I didnt add anything. While your curing the rock in the tank just dont add anything till your levels begin to level out. Thats what I did.

There is no dip that gets rid of just bad things, it could just as easily kill some of the organisms that you want to keep.

Get fully cured stuff if you want to be able to drop it in your tank and be good to go.
If you get uncured, there is no "quick" way to make it better. Just have to take the time to let it sit, maintin proper levels in your tank, and ride out the amonia-nitrie-nitrate cycle which should take 2-5 weeks depnding on the amount of decaying matter left in/on the uncured rock.
