What is a good thermometer that everybody uses for there tank. Those small coralife ones stink. I want to get something that's accurate but doesn't kill the pocket book.

Do you have a controller? If you don't then how are you heating your tank? If your counting on the heater to turn on /off on its own - its an accident waiting to happen. If the heater sticks on ( which has happened to all of us) - it will overheat the tank and kill stuff. Get yourself a Ranco temp controller or something similar to turn the heater on/off and those have decent thermometers built into it.

I have 2 300 watt finnex heaters running. I use to have them hooked up to the finnex digital control but took them off and I am just using the heaters. I just bought two Eheim Jager 300watt trutemp heaters.

I picked up my Ranco units used - so they were pre-wired for me. I do not believe it is hard to wire them. Mine have 2 plugs and the temperature probe that comes with it. I put temp probe in sump, the male plug goes into wall outlet , the other plug is a outlet/female end that you plug the heater into. The unit controls the heater by turning electricity on /off to the heater via the female plug. So you set the temp on the heater to the highest it will go so it turns on as soon as it is provided electricity , and set the Ranco unit to what ever temp you want your tank to be. Works well and lasts a long time. I use one for my QT and one for my main setup. I monitor temp via my Apex but do not use it for a temp controller because I already had a Ranco functioning well when I picked up a classic Apex - so I am too lazy to switch it.

you could have jumped on this one;

Up until I had gotten a controller, which has its own temp probe. I used two thermometers; regular ones, one inside the tank and the other one in the sump and adjusted accordingly. I know, Dark ages, right? But I do believe that Pinpoint now makes a digital temp monitor, might be wrong. I do know there are a variety selections of digital thermometers at Dr Fosters and Smith and other Fish friendly sites that might fit the budget. Good luck in choosing!

I have a controller, but still run my heaters off of Ranco controllers. In my opinion they are the safest option for one of the most common fail points in aquariums.
