I, like many others I am sure, have had problems with sandbeds becoming clogged with detritus over time. When you move you have to throw out most of the established sandbeds, and keep just a little to seed a new one.
The other day I noticed something that would make moving the organisms in a sand bed possible. If you place new sand over the old sand the critters alive in the old sand bad migrate upward into the new sand bed to remain close to the surface. You can see this through the side of the tank.
Might be a good idea for starting an new sandbed from an established tank. Place new sand over old sand, leave it there for a week, then pick up the new sand with critters mixed in!
