gorg and leather fight?

i just picked up a pretty nice tall what they called a "corky finger gorgonian" the only place i could put it in my tank that would look nicely balanced is within striking range of my devils hand leather...i am just wondering if when the leather opens up is it going to try and battle with the gorg or vise versa?

if a battle does ensue, who will be the victor? not that i want either to lose, i just want to keep my eyes out for battle marks...

currently they are both closed up and looking a touch po'ed...

i am also going to post this in the leather forum too..

Leathers are fairly toxic, especially kenya tree and colt corals. I would imagine that the leather would win the chemical warfare.
Move the corals, that way nothing gets hurt.

i know how nasty leathers can be....there is loads of carbon in my system though...

as for moving the corals...LOL...hard enough to get my hand in the tank let alone move anything...

Hmm, if you see any white streak marks or retracting polyps near were the corals touch, you probably would wan't to cut something back.

i am not familiar with PJ reef, what is that? tank manufacturer?

on a side note, how does one tell if a gorg is NPS or not? can someone tell me if mine is? i feed my little tank like 4-5 times daily anyway.

from my experience, with what i was told is a devil's hand, they are very very toxic when healthy. i say from my experience because you see so many cross references with leathers, i.e. finger leathers, devils hand. or kenya tree, colt coral, spaghetti coral. but a guy sliced a piece of his devils hand for me on the spot, his entire tank was toadstool and d.hand dominated as they out competed nearly everything else. anyways, after he cut it on the spot and gave it to me, highly not recommended (open wound, infections) i took it home and a day later it started to root into my tank substrate. I already had one in my other tank and this one was free, went to give it to my friend and as i picked it up it started leaching toxins out like crazy, im talking cloudy water in seconds. caused a bacterial outbreak and killed most of the livestock in that tank (mushrooms). just touching it and moving it caused the toxin release. Granted it came from a healthy stock and it was stressed out (it had already opened and started to attach in a day) i have never witnessed such chemical voraciousness ever before than by the devil's hand leather.

lol i feel like im trying to scare you. but true stories.

That devil's hand is gonna outgrow that tank pretty quickly, especially being fed. I have 2, one went from a tiny ball to 5 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches & the other went from peanut sized to 8 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches (not fully expanded) in 2 years. Once they started growing noticeably, they went nuts. I removed the smallest one, the other one is still in the 55...it's huge in there LOL. The only coral affected by any of my large leathers right next to them (palys, zoas, shrooms, some LPS) other than being too shaded is my cabbage leather next to the largest devil's hand. It's growing very slowly now, doesn't expand like it used to, & almost always has at least one portion of it shedding. I also run carbon 24/7.

I have to ask, why would you buy another coral when you have no room?

pffft no room....there is lots of room in there...LOL

i bought that cause my toadstool that was inthe that spot went for a crap...i fragged the toad and put it back in...that devils had is over two years old...it was my first coral i put in along with the green sinularia above it..the devils hand was the size of a 2 dollar coin (1.5") when i got it...now it is about 6x6"

i like the look of a full tank, and i dont mind my corals touching and competing for space...i honestly havent really seen much in the way of physical attacks between corals though....i also run carbon 24/7, along with phosban, and Purigen....(come to think of it time to change it out)

Tank is bigger than I thought. I kind of wondered because of the shape of the devil's hand. Mine only did that once they got larger. My smaller one stayed almost round until I cut it off the vertical rock it was on and laid it down. I love a full tank too, which is why I picked softies & LPS. The only active aggression in my tank is my galaxea goes after a red mushroom. My mom noticed one tentacle attached to the mushroom back in Feb & I got some pics. The mushroom is almost beaten now and the galaxea has gotten more aggressive...many more tentacles reaching, but I've not seen one atached again. Sneaky!

My GSP has been fending off a blue mushroom, the shroom is sligtly misshapen now on that one side, that's just from contact. When the shroom first moved there, it looked like it was going to beat back the GSP, but now it's the opposite.

I have 2 finger leathers, one's huge. The leathers touch often with no bad results other than the cabbage shedding a lot & growing up instead of out. They also variously touch shrooms, zoas, and some palys. The LPS are all kept away from each other so far. We'll see what happens when they get larger provided the leathers don't shade the entire bottom of the tank!

i have 2 delvils hands, 4 diff colored toad stools, colt, Kenya tree, 3 neon green nepths, a cabbage leather, and a finger leather.. i have 8 different photo gorgs placed misc in and around these softies... they touch randomly as the current moves them... no ill effects

i like the sound of that...lets see a pic of those please...

Sushi, the tank isnt that big...lol it is only 5 gallons...12" diameter and 14" tall (exact same size as an instant ocean pail of salt)...holy poop. it has been at least 3 months since i dug that pail out too...dang i guess it is time to change it (the water) too...i dont use IO salt, just the pail...i use a blend of reef crystals and salinity salts...i only blend cause i have the two, and wanted to use them up...once the two bags are gone i will exclusively use salinity..

My 55 is only 12 inches front to back LOL.

i am looking at building a 40L, or a 30XL both same foot print 48x12, 40 is 16 tall and the 30 is only 12....just have to find a sweet place to put it first (without the wife pooping on me anyway) i would really like to have four fish possibly 5...the only ones i really want are a pair of plain orange percs ( i like the classics) a pair of bangai cardinals, i would also like a purple fire fish and/or a fairy wrasse....i wold love an angler fish but that would drastically limit my other fish...so i am thinking the 40 and i would love to fill it with various softies and lots of photo gorgs...

on a side note, how easy is it to frag the gorg i have now/ is it as simple as a quick snip with a pairs of shears?

also, can someone tell me the species name of my particular gorg?
