Gorilla glue rock wall

Stole the idea from a RC member. Really happy with the way it turned out. Nothing but Gorilla glue, rubble and sand.

Thanks guys,

It was really easy. Just regular Gorilla glue straight out of the bottle. I laid the tank on it's back and did small sections at a time. I squirted some glue on the glass, spread it out in a thin layer with a piece of rock, dumped a handful of rubble on it, spread that out evenly then sprinkled with sand. The Gorilla glue will foam up a bit so a thin layer is all you need. I think I used a little too much. This stuff is really strong.

I think once I get water in the tank and wash off some of the excess sand it will look much better.

For reference, the tank pictured is a 20 long and it took a little more than half an 8oz. bottle of glue, about 6lbs. of rubble and maybe 2 or 3 cups of sand.

I'd be tempted to try this with a sheet of plexiglass so I could remove it from the tank if I wanted. I really like the idea.

Thanks. Not sure how you would mount the plexi. I'd probably think twice about doing this on an expensive tank but I think it looks nice on the 20 long.

Hey alpine,

I didn't take any pictures of the process but if you have specific questions I'd be happy to help.

If you look at the top left of the first picture you can see I left room to drill an overflow.
That was pretty much the process, spread the glue and dump rocks then sand on it and smooth it out.

Sup K, the tank has water since early January. I've slowly been adding frags and today got my order from reef cleaners. Snails, hermits and shrimp are doing fine, crawling all over the rock wall, as well as the softies I've been adding. I was a little leary of the glue leaching but so far so good.

I wonder if this method was done on the bottom it would give you the benefits of a bare bottom with out the looks of a bare bottom?

Gorilla Glue when cured is similar, if not the same as Great Stuff foam people like to use. I glued a large, expensive piece of rock back together several years ago when I knocked it over in the driveway pressure washing it. That was 2007 or 2008 IIRC. That piece of rock is still one of the large base show pieces in my 210. It's covered in all kinds of stuff now, and I couldn't begin to identify where it was broken in several smaller pieces.

I'd say "no". The whole idea of running a tank BB is that the water movement easily removes detritus from the bottom glass up into the water column and out into a filter sock or whatever you use so you can export it from the system. If you had rubble and sand glued down like the picture above I think it would trap the detritus really easily.

But for a rock wall - it's sweet :)
