Got Ich...

So I spotted one single white speck on the side of one of my clowns. Figured it was nothing serious(sand or something) cuz it was one spec and gone after 2 days... Then that clown began acting lethargic, remaining in a corner, barely moving, and hasn't eaten for the last two days. I unfortunately do not have a QT setup yet, but this may be the kick in the a** to get it going.

Livestock in the DT:
-Clown Pair
-Cleaner Shrimp
-Acro Frags (3x)
-Duncan Frag

I know I cannot treat with meds in the DT. But, Is Hypo-Salinity an option or will that kill the frags and invert? Is my only true option a hasty Hospitol Tank?

From reading up on Ich it looks like my DT will be empty for about 9 weeks(Fallow Period).

Epic Fail... :/

Wade - try garlic ... I use 2 drops of garlic powder (from Brightwell Aquatics) on every cube of mysis that I feed to my fish. They really seem to like the garlic as they attack the baster when I feed the tank... Let me know if you need a couple of cubes with some garlic power on them ??

Thanks Jose. Will this treat Ich or just help their immune system fight it and buy some time? Can I use any garlic powder?

A buddy at work who is into Freshwater is hooking me up with a brand new canister filter with built in UV sterilizer. And the PetCo $1/Gal sale is starting on Sun so I have a good start on setting up a Hospital tank. Still gonna need a heater and possibly an air stone/pump. I am kinda leaning towards the Hypo-Salinity method of treatment.

Garlic is an immunobooster though, so can aid the fish in fighting off the ich. Garlic helps fish to eat when they may not otherwise feel like it.

Got my QT set up today. Once the temp stabilizes I will probably try and get the clown pair in there tonight and start bringing down the salinity tomorrow for the Hypo-Salinity treatment method. Should have done this in the first place...

Make sure your salinity doesn't vary at all with hypo. They usually recommend an ATO.
With clowns I would use cupramine since they are hardy and it is much more foolproof.
I tried hypo once, didn't get it quite right and now default to cupramine ramped up to full dose over 4-7 days. If you do use cupramine turn off the uv and make sure the media in your canister will not absorb the medication.

That is nicer than the new TMC wing....

Thanks. :) My little clowns seem pretty happy in the allready. Every new fish I get will definitely spend some time in the QT first.

An ATO would definitely be the best way to go. We keep our house pretty cold which kinda helps with the evap but yea. I mostly chose Hypo method because on the 8th I will be going out of town for 23days... So I figured it would be easier for the GF to monitor and not deal with Meds or WCs. But if I can just use cupramine in less than 8-days(before I leave). That would be preferred. The media in the canister is just cotton pads that were in my sump that I also dosed with Microbacter 7. What do you think Ed? Thanks for the help.

Does the UV sterilizer kill the beneficial bacteria?

The UV would probably kill the bacteria if it passed through the light.
I'd be hesitant to leave any fish for 23 days in a newly set up tank without waterchanges, let alone one with sick fish. Either treatment will not be complete in 8 days, and you need to run your tank fallow for an extended period as well. There is a ton of information in the fish disease forum. Please research before you do anything so you can make sure you are effectively treating the disease.

Thanks. They are eating and swimming and seem pretty well at the moment but I know this is just a stage of the Ich process and they are still infected. I will probably have to not treat them at all until I return then... I will be leaving the DT fallow for 10weeks. I have read up quite a bit on QTs but haven't got too in depth with specific illness or treatments, But I certainly will. I will also have everything set up to make WCs as easy as possible for the GF.

were you going for 23 days? i'd have gone with medication treatment with water changes if i was leaving for 23 days and not hypo salinity. I actually had my now wife do that with her Freshwater tank with the fish she had that she loved.....

Granted freshwater is easier.... fill a jug add some declorinator and viola. She did a 25% WC every other day for 2 weeks she loved those little fishes... Especially her betta.

Military training...she actually bought me the clown pair for valentines day so she loves em too but she works 6or7 days a week so the less she has to keep up with while I'm gone the better. Being new to the hobby I don't want to kill her interest with a rigorous routine.
