granite in reef tank

Sorry, wish I could help you...
All I know is that I've never seen anyone use granite in a saltwater aquarium before. It may leach bad minerals into the water.

Also, because granite is not porous, it would never really serve well as biological filtration.

i was just mainly wanting to use small pieces to put frags on i work for a place were i can get all the small scraps i want

Perhaps if you were to boil the frag chunks before using them, to sterilize them, they would be okay?
Just my opinion though.

Granite is mostly silica (about 75%) and aluminum (about 10%) so this might be an issue. However, it might be just fine if at high pH the silica/aluminum stays bound up in the rock. Randy would be the person to ask about this...

Also, minerals like garnite and fools gold are comonly prevalent with granite rocks. I might be wrong, but both of these minerals are rich in iron and other metal content - which I don't think is a good thing to have in a reef tank.

yeah, I thought granite contained iron as well....

It does - but probably not an issue...

Ive seen granite used in cold water reefs a number of times with no ill effects. If youre just using it as decoration here and there, I imagine it would be fine- dont know why it would be any different in a tropical reef vs a temperate one.

Same question for ceramic tile. Is it reef safe for frag mounts?
Yes- have seen ceramic tile used many times with frags, esp xenia and zoanthids.
