gravity feed/float valve for ato

Seems like most ato setups use a float switch and small pump... float switches and pumps seem prone to failure, especially the switches.

Any reason I couldn't use a float valve and a gravity drip?

Rick maley used to do this as his dosing. He would gravity feed his kalk. Just have to find some place to keep you reservoir.

Yeah, that isn't a problem. Its a small system, so the gravity feed should be plenty fast, just wasn't sure how big the swings would be between on/off cycles with the float valve.

Iwould concwrn with the different rates of evaporation during different seasons. They have an extronic sensor that could be used.

My top off setup is gravity fed form a five gallon salt bucket with limewater. Haven't noticed any major swings during the different seasons. Biggest problem I've had was with it getting clogged but never an over flow.

Does anyone use a timer for ATO? I have a 5G so it works well for me because I dont have anywhere to put a float switch. It's difficult this time of year adjusting it with the season change though.
