I am the proud owner of a bamboo shark and some tangs and today i even found something cooler the the LFS.
I was in there buying pinkies for my shark when in saw a fish that was like the one from finding nemo. It was the one they called dori. it blue and awesome. I dont know if i should put it in my 55g with the shark and tangs but i was wondering if i could possible set up a 10g i have from my old snakes home that died a couple of years back. im going to get hermit craps and a mantis shrimp for cleaning..
any advice

well first off, from what i've read a mantis shrimp is a bad idea. they kill pretty much anything they can get their hands on... "opportunistic omnivore" is a phrase i've been reading a lot. get a pistol or cleaner shrimp for a clean up crew.

2nd, the blue hippo tang needs at least a 48" long tank, as they are very active swimmers and need horizontal space to dart around.

if this is a joke, well, hey, more power to ya. isn't there an OT on this forum?

Sorry for negativity. Your story just sounds too incredible to believe. If everything you are saying is true, your setup to fail. Read all that you can on stickies as far as water quality and how to set up and care for aquarium. I would take your livestock back to your friend, and ask him to help you set up the tank properly.

if he has a shark he's probably ok on how to care for an aquarium, just wasn't up to speed on that specific fish. double/simultaneous post! :)

Sharky, there are many many things that can be found on this fantastic site without having to ask any questions. And after a little research here you would have found that having sharks in any size tank is somewhat frowned upon by this community. Also people here are very passionate about tangs and what type of tank is suitable for them and a 55gal is boarderline even for the non tang police type person. Now you went and put both of them in one 55gal... its like almost sacreligous (sp) lol.

I would like to offer you advice as would the rest of the people here, but short of get rid of both those fish and start over there isnt really anything else to tell you.

to be honest, i dont know it sounds like a bunch of bs to me, he says he is the proud owner of a shark and some tangs in a 55g, but does not know about a hippo tang. If he wasnt familiar with a hippo tang i dont understand how he could be familiar with a matis?? I dont know though, a lot of reading needs to be done either way...

well i called the pet store and they said they cant take it back cuz i might have damaged it cuz my salt wanst the right salt. so i guess i might just have to put her down??=(

I think this is a joke...but if it isn't...

1. A Bamboo Shark needs at least a 150-200 gallon tank as an absolute minimum.

2. Most tangs, other than a Yellow or Kole tang need a minimum 100 gallon tank (and that is for just 1 tang). You may be able to keep 1 yellow or kole tang in your 55 gallon tank.

3. The fish you saw in the store, "Dori" is a Blue Tang that needs a minimum 100 gallon tank. It is a very common fish, and not very hardy if you dont have an established tank.

I would not recommend anything else but returning what you have to the LFS for possible credit. You can get various blennys or gobys for a tank your size. At this point, even buying a MUCH larger tank won't remedy the situation as the time to get a large tank setup, will not be enough time to keep the bamboo shark in the 55 gallon.

lol, sorry, I couldn't resist.

Just in case tho... Please return or give away all your tank inhabitants before they die. Then do as much research as you can, reading here and asking questions untill you understand EVERYTHING (well, almost everything) and then start again with your set up
