Hi everybody,

After much consideration I decided this was the right place to post this. If I'm mistaken sorry, the mods should feel free to move it!

I'm a producer for an emmy-award winning company. I'm currently working on a show about pet fishes and aquariums. The show would probably be some kind of travel show, with a host (who is also a fish expert) traveling around the country to meet aquarium owners and simply talk to them about their aquarium and their fishes.

The goal is to have great footage of those aquariums and fishes! I've found that it's impossible to find, on TV or on the Internet, good quality videos. Except for amateur stuff on youtube, there's almost nothing!
We'd also provide advice and information about all kind of fishes, how to take care of them and of your tank, etc, etc.

I'm posting here to you to get some advice! I haven't been into the hobby for a long time, and you guys obviously know a lot. What do you think of such a show? Would you watch it?

Right now we're thinking of putting it online, for free! We'd advertise in different websites and/or magazines, hobbyist could just click and watch whenever they want.

Do you think there could be some enthusiasm for our show? Once again, I want to point out that we want to make a really good quality-show. Great equipment (probably HD), great experts, really interesting content.

I'd really appreciate any advice you guys have. As I said, we're just preparing for the show now, and I want to make sure we'll reach the right people, and, well, that it will be interesting for everybody!

So let's start a discussion on this! I'm open to any comment and ideas!

Thanks!
Ben.

I would love that! I sit around on Reefcentral alllllllll day and having a show about the same things discussed here would let me sit infront of the TV all day! I think thats a great idea I just hope the intrest is broad enough to reach people and keep interest.

I would like to apply for that job! I am told I am decent to look at ;) and I know more than enough enough to conduct intelligent interviews, LOL!

Seriously, I would watch it. I watch everything ocean related. I always wished there was a show on Animal Planet or the Science channel that covered our hobby.

I remember being a small kid and always being excited to learn about the smaller life that populates the ocean reefs. I thought the best part of discoveries series blue planet was when they discussed the reef. I think you would find that everyone on this site would be estatic at the thought of a show devoted to reefing. There is only so much shark week us ocean enthusiasts can handle!

Years ago there was an old boy (Paul Speice?) who had a show on PBS for years called Guppies to Groupers.
It was based on freshwater systems. I always wondered why they didn't do a series on marine systems, since the colors alone would have played much better on TV than the freshwater species.

You might want to check out some of his work first, to get a better handle on what to do and what not to do, as far as pruduction values are concerned.

Oh, by the way Ben:

Please do, LOL. I know some of the experts...oh, and by the way I really hope you get something like this going. Everything thing on is always about sharks. Us Reefers watch those so we can get a glimpse of the rest of the fish and the coral. Not that we don't like sharks...

Off topic...I get so infuriated at the shark shows that I can't watch them anymore! It seems the only way "they" think they can make sharks interesting is to depict them as killers and man-eaters. Play down to the lowest intelligence level of the viewers...but I expect more from the Discovery Channel.

On topic...I would watch a program like that wherever you chose to make it viewable. Unfortunately, I seem to have unusual viewpoints and tastes, so I would not expect your program to be popular outside of hobbiests, biologists and specialists.

That would be awesome! I think it would be a great show for kids to watch and to get them interested in the things you can find in the ocean.

YES!!!!, lord knows theres plenty of shows on gardening/ cooking/ pottery that appeal to people with specific intrests. even before i started my tank ive wished for a show like this and jealously scorned gardners over their abundance of informative viewing material. think of all of us that sit here on reef central every oppurtunity we get whether it be at home at work or anywhere we can get an internet connection. and thats just on 1 forum alone. i think u would have quite a folowing if u release it on the internet and advertise it enough.

please keep us posted

You got to have it on cable not only a dish !! I 'm on cable but would go to a dish just for that show if I had to .

I think it would be a great show. To be able to see visually how things are set up, along with ideas, ratings of certain products, etc would be amazing. Please pursue the concept.

I've been thinking about this subject for a long time. How often I have wished there was a tv show on our hobby. Personally I think it would attract a substantial amount of viewers. Like others have mentioned, I also have watched the specials on sharks and reefs just so I could learn more about the fish and coral in the background. GREAT IDEA TO DO THIS!

now when discovery did blue planet, i only watched the one about the reefs. what they did was nice but there is so much more about reefs than what they did!

by the way sunfish11 would be a great host! heck she set up our club to get in to fosters and smith's coral farm this past weekend! now that was a great time!! check out my wife scoping out some frags there :)

This show would be a must watch in my book! Focusing on everything from basic marine tank start up to more specific coral care and propegation, shedding light onto different systems and setups of successful reefers. Getting some good footage of reefs in the wild may help to keep veiwers who are not yet into the hobby interested as well. I for one can't get enough of seeing how other people put together thier tanks, lighting, electrical, plumbing, even stand building. The specific featured show topics seem like they could be limitless. There could be featured tanks of the month just like here on RC.
I am just imagining the possibilities! I would love to be on the team that creates this program!

Those of us who are in the hobby would be sure to watch. How are you going to hook the general public in order to justify the business case? One vote for Lisa as host.

bump for more votes. I would watch every episode. It would be great to go and see some of the past tank of the months on video!
