Great idea on water supply?

As a reefer we all have to battle the costs of keeping and operating a tank. So at least for myself, I am always thinking of ways to help the hobby and or decrease the cost of operation. Being that I just moved in and I am realizing the costs of watering my lawn, I am considering of getting an Irrigation Water Meter. Basically this meter is different from your normal meter because it is designed to be used for watering your lawn. So you are only charged for water and not sewer fees. On a normal water bill, your bill is comprised of water and sewer fees. On the actual water bill water represents 1/3 of the money owed and sewer is 2/3.

What I was thinking of doing was adding this irrigation meter for watering my lawn. This costs $200 plus a $35 permit fee. Then where I tapped this meter at connected it to my sprinkler system at the backflow preventer; I was thinking of adding a spicket and hooking up my RO DI unit with a hose.

So for an initial $235 plus some elbow grease, I will save on my water bill for my lawn and RODI water use. And if anyone from the city asks why I have a spicket I can say it is for hand watering the flower beds, etc.

Good idea??

It was until you posted on the internet about it. You are probably going to get flamed pretty good for posting a way to get around the system.

West Coast Wierdo.....

If the water you are using is not ending up in the sewer system, you're not "posting a way to get around the system".
I think it's a great idea. I'll take a look at it also. Where did you find the rules about this.

Just remember your waste water. 100gals of RODI makes 300-400gals of waste water.. that does end up in the sewer.

Now what I would like to know is how I can use this RODI waste on my lawn. Dump it to a huge barrel and use a pump to water the lawn or something. Has anyone does this?

My RO/DI waste waters my rose garden and tops off my swimming pool. None of it goes down the drain.

Same here Mike - OK I did before the pool was removed. I had my RO waste go right into my swimming pool for top off. Now I have it under some of my plants. I don't use a sprinkler system (now that is a waste of water :)).

I agree. That's why I have Bahia grass, otherwise called hay!

I leave a 5 gallon bucket to catch the waste water and then I use it in the flower beds, etc.

I will look to see if I can find the application form for the irrigation meter. As for the rules, I dont think there are rules per say, but I would assume that the purpose is supposed to be for irrigation since this is the purpose of adding this meter. More info to come.

Okay guys here it is; call 813.272.6680 for the Customer Service line and tell them you are requesting the application for an irrigation meter. They will ask you a few questions and then send you a form to fill out. Also, you will have to get a permit to add this, so call 813.272.5600

Something else to take into consideration, you will have to have a blackflow preventer to make this legit.

I am about to do this so I will post follow up on how it all works out.

Chris

I have a well. My waste water goes down the drain to the septic tank ,then into a drain field where it is pumped into the yard. Kinda a long way around just plumbing it outside huh . :)

I was looking into this for my lawn 2 years ago but never followed through. My water bill is high because i water my St. augustine(Water hog) allot.
