Does anyone know if it is normal for an Acropora to have some white at the base or do you think this is a problem. It has doubled in size in the last since I got it, here are two pics from January and now.

Yea that is definately dying at the base. I have actually saved some sps pieces from tissue recession etc that I got from other people. I actually fragged above the receeding/dead tissue then glued it where I wanted it and fed it phytoplankton and zooplankton and made sure it got high lighting and they all encrusted very nicely and grew well. Personally in your case I would want to do the same. Fragging it above the dead tissue will hopefully help it feel like it need to grow and encrust faster and reverse the recession. Just though I'd throw that idea out cause it worked for every sps that was having similar problems. Good luck.

Same here, you get a faster recovery, and pest eggs like to congregate at the base...IME

True true very true! :P The last sps that I saved is a hair beast acro (I think thats what its called) And it had probably a good 1/4 of the whole bottom of the coral was freshly receeding and dead with a whole bunch of hydroids all over it at the bottom. I fragged the coral off abut 1/2cm above the recession, including any dead branches. It's now making a full recovery, encrusting and any branches I had to cut off has some good growth. I think that if he did the same with this coral and moved it to a different location in the tank then it should be ok I'm thinkin.
