green birdsnest placement ?

Last night I picked up two 6" colonies of green birdsnest from a "œretiring" local reefer who had grown them out from frags. One is the bright green variety, the other is the more teal colored type. Believe it or not, the reefer had them in a 90 gallon mixed reef with only a single Koralia 2 powerhead for water movement. Not only that, the colonies were on the opposite end of the tank that the powerhead was located. Both colonies look great and appear to be completely healthy.

Where should I best place these corals in my SPS reef? In contrast to their former home, I have a 80x flow rate in my reef. And, in contrast to their former "œhome" of 250w MH lighting, I have a 400w Radium fixture. How do I best keep these colonies happy in the high flow, higher light environment of my reef?

I'd say place it lower in your tank so that it has a chance to acclimate itself to the 400W light instead of the 250. Also, try to put it where there is somewhat of a dead zone for flow. I'm sure they'll do fine. Eventually start moving it towards the place where you really want it to stay.

IME, birdsnest like like light and medium flow. I keep mine towards the bottom of my tank. When I put my high in my tank under LEDs or MH, I would not get nearly as much polyp extension.
