Green birdsnest???

I was at the LFS last night and the guy there sold me this piece of birdsnest for $10. He said it would be a good starter to see if my tank will do ok with sps. My question is what would be the best way to place this guy. Can I stick it in a small hole in the rocks and see is it puts a foot down or should I glue it to the rock? I hate to glue it down to find out it doesn't like that spot.

So if I glue it down should I glue it laying on its side or standing up? I could see it bushing more sideways.

glue it straight up, they barely make a foot and you want it branching out as much as possible. at least most people do, especially if you planning on having this tank long term

Thank you. I found a spot i think will work. All its polyps were out last night so we will see.

I bleached mine when I ran LEDs and my acros were still looking okay. Just keep in mind the upper limit is probably a little less than acros. It is starting to get green color back after switching to T5.

I'm running a single ai prime light peaked at 70% the birdsnest seems to be happy so far though it's only been a couple days. I can see where it's beginning new growth and starting new branches. Some of the tips were damaged from the guy at the LFS. He had just torn down a nice reef and had a bin of these and some other branching corals that he was soon to glue to plugs. So far so good I hope it keeps this up!!!

I lay them down and I also cut frags and glue them down around the base to help the colony get strong multibranch bases.

I like this idea! How would you recommend cutting them? And also does it make a difference as to where it is cut?

I will do something like that with it this weekend. Here's a pic of it tonight. As you can see the polyps are out and there are some light colored spots near the tips that look to me like new growth, please correct me if I'm wrong.

They can grow anywhere -- mine's on the sand behind the rock getting like 10% of the available light and growing like a weed.

Careful, they can apparently become carnivorous snailovores..

I nipped the top off last night and stuck it on the same rock just the other side. I can say I'm impressed by the growth this thing shows, you guys weren't kidding about it [emoji23]. So far I'm really happy about it!!!! Thank you again RC members!!!
