Green File Algae

So every morning I have a light green dusting of film algae on my glass

I never used to have this problem till I moved from dublin to marysville.

What I changed when I moved was

From PC Light Fixture to a Two 250Watt 15K MH Lights and 4 PC 64 Watt Atinics

Also started using RO water ... NOT RO DI

I am thinking that maybe the issue is that the RO system isnt as pure as it should be... maybe need to change cartridges

also wondering about light bulbs because they were the free bulbs that came with the unit... maybe should change them?

I haven't tested yet but will later .....

The tank is a 90 Gallon.... with a 29 gallon long sump.... with cheato and a sand bed w/some rock....

Have a skimmer that consistently pulls out gunk.

Hey Rob,

it must be a zip code thing from the move.

RO to RO/DI is always a good upgrade.

Get a TDS meter and add it inline with your RO setup...marine depot.

Most tanks have a slight bit of film on the glass. It's when it's all over the rock and sand is when you are in trouble. It's when it's all throughout your sump is when it's not too good.
Limiting the area by a fuge that is properly setup is said to help.

There is a skimmer debate posted by Thinslis, and the C-Sea "Click" Et Al that has some info on the whole micro vs macro debate that may yeild some useful info, that is inbetween the peeing contest. I posted as much useful information I could before it started to get too thick. Check it out.


BTW. I have micro very very light green film growing on my glass. Rocks are clear and the snails keep it down to a dull roar and I just hit it with a razor blade very carefully that I have attached to a piece of 1/2 inch CPVC (high pressure small diameter cream yellow type) pipe. I have to do this to all my tanks every 2 to 4 days. It's when it's tan, brown, or red, or really dark green and thick...that's when you're in trouble.
