green hair algae question

I have been fighting green gha for while now and had a question. Does gha release any bad stuff if it is broken loose and chopped up by my vortecs? I have been cleaning the hair algae by scrubbing is loose by a tooth brush and have it caught up in my skimmer outlet. It does quite a good job of removing it from the tank. My corals are usually stressed pretty bad for several days after that and I was wondering if I might be causing the stress by the way my vortecs shred the algae?
