Green Hair Algae

Blackber

New member
Hey guys,

New member here just getting into the salt water tank world and enjoying it so far.

I was concerned with some algae growth I've been experiencing in my Biocube 16 and I wanted to get your opinion.

Does this algae growth look normal or does it look like GHA to you?

P.S. I just added the rock in front that's why there's no algae on it.

Thanks in advance. IMG_3152.jpgIMG_3153.jpgIMG_3154.jpg

What are your water parameters? How old is the tank? What is your bio-load?

This looks like a variety of typical green algae (Chlorophyta).

Hey,

My tank has been cycling since December.

I just introduced 2 clown fish about 2 weeks ago and my CUC 1 week ago.

My water parameters are as follows:

Salinity - 1.023 (I've been slowly increasing it to a goal of 1.024-1.025 through top offs)
PH - 8.0
Ammonia - 0.50 ppm
Nitrite - 0.25 ppm
Nitrate - 0.0 ppm
Calcium - 380 ppm
DKH = 8 / ppm kH = 143.2
Phosphate - 0.0 ppm

Would appreciate your thoughts. I'd like to add some small beginner corals in the next week or so.

Blackber, your tank isn't cycled if you have .5ppm ammonia... Anything higher than 0ppm can be deadly for any sort of inhabitant.

What do you recommend I do to lower the ammonia?

A couple of weeks ago it was at 0.0 ppm.

Never mind. Answered my own question. I'll get on it right away. Thanks.

If you only have a couple of clownfish they will probably be okay. I would recommend doing a water change and continuing to be being patient. I recommend making sure your lights are not on too long and you are feeding only as needed.

Consider adding a dKH buffer. Your pH is a little low likely due to your alkalinity. I like to keep my tanks at about 10. Here is a well written article discussing alkalinity and pH: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2002/5/chemistry

If you're growing algae I highly doubt you have ammonia, and I would suspect you use API test kits, which always give a false positive test.
