Green Scolymia Spawning...

Chaotic Reefer4u

♥Acropora Aficionado♥
wow last night when the halides turned off and only the actinics were on i caught my green scoly deflate in an instant and spew somthing like a brown cloud that quikly dissipated in the water column:eek:  is this possible? it looked just like the way a clam spawns, any clue's as if this was a spawning by the scoly? thanx in advance fellow reef peeps...:smokin:

When corals poop it seems like the poop doesn't dissipate and if it does it takes a failrly long time. My scolymia pooped last night in it was stringy and then it floated away.

How quickly did it dissipate? It could have been poop, though the fast deflation event seems odd. Most of my corals deflate slowly when pooping, if at all. Quick deflations and a quickly disbursing cloud seems more like a reporductive event to me. All the broadcast spawners in my tank that i've seen spawn do it very quickly.
Color doesn't mean much, other then the fact that poop and expelled zooanthellae are also brown. I've seen several colors of sperm (eggs?), brown among them.
What do you feed it?

I know exactly what you are talking about. It was poop. I had a torch that spawned, It would release white sperm and these white globules that looked a little like a drop from a lava lamp. Sorry.

Yep! 'twas expelling xooxanthellae!
When corals with xooxanthellae receive enough light, the algae within photosynthesizes. The coral releases an enzyme to cause the xooxanthellae to release nutrients to feed the coral. This symbiotic algae, xooxanthellae, often gives their skin a tan or brown tint.
