I just picked one up today and it is on this stupid plug. Can I just break it off the plug and glue it to the rock?

I don't see why not. It is very hardy and very tolerant of a wide variety of conditions, stressors, etc.

You may want to wait a few days to remount it. Many people find that newly mounted SPS have a lower chance of RTN if they are given time to adjust to their new surroundings first.
