About a week ago, I noticed that I had very few green spots on my rocks. I thought it was something small and didn't put mind to it. Slowly I have noticed that they have been growing on my other rocks as well. today I came home and noticed that it was on a lot of my rocks. I do 50% water changes every two weeks. I have the following in my tank

56gal tank

2 clowns
2 cardinals
one purple/yellow dotty
one lemon damsel
one starfish
one shrimp
4 snails
1 torch

Is it hard to rub off, like you need to use a fingernail to scratch it of kind of hard? If so it's coralline.

I haven't attempted to scrub it off.. I didn't want to risk it breaking off and spreading even more.. I will attempt to do so.. And if it is coralline, is it bad? What could I do to get rid of it?

In my tank, my coralline starts white turns a greenish and then the purple/pinkish color. It takes about 1-2 weeks for it to happen. Dkuhlman is right, if is hard and not soft like algae, it looks like coralline.

Good. It doesn't look like coralline algae to me. Rock looks new. Looks like some algae staining to me. As long as it doesn't start growing off the rocks like hair, ferns or bushes I wouldn't worry about it. Watch your nitrates and phosphates.

Thank you! I don't see any hairy-like substance.. It all started on my pukani and now it has spread to my others..ill keep an eye on it as well as any drops or spikes in levels

Green coraline is almost as common as unicorns. It is very likely algae, super common as the tank matures and not necessarily a problem unless it starts to spread rapidly or becomes hair algae.

Lol well jeez.. I like the way u put it.. I'll keep an eye on it.. Hopefully this doesn't go haywire on me.. So much time and money put in.. I would hate to have to start over.. But most importantly the health of the fish that I have in there now

I dunno it's shown up in my last two tanks. Maybe just got lucky with my last supplier :D

Then I guess unicorns *do* exist! When my coraline starts in a new spot, it comes in a lime green then gradually turns to purple.

Regardless, looking at the original poster's photos, that doesn't look like coraline to me. Not sure what it is though.

It is the process of growing coraline algae, you can even look on YouTube some people that set up their tank with dry rock then look few months later it's lime green then a year later it's purple

Coralline usually starts at about 2-3 months with a new tank, Like I said my guess is it's coralline unless its easy to rub off. No matter what it is, your tank is going through the new tank ugglies and there's nothing you can do to stop it. The coralline stage is beautiful starting with lime green and turning to yellow, pink and finally all purple. So sit back and enjoy the show, it's going to be one hell of a ride :D

Thanks a lot! My tank just turned 4 months.. I went through the the diatoms a month ago which was frustrating.. Now this lol.. I just panicked that's all I guess.. And it doesn't wipe off easily.. I can't get rid of it by just passing my hand through it.. I have to put small pressure and rub

Again, I would watch it. It might just be coralline starting. I know not everyone will agree with me but look a this picture from my tank...

Sorry so fuzzy because all the stuff in the water column, goby just woke up and is sifting away. My point is see the green spot in a week or two that will turn purple just like the rest of the wall has. Not saying that is what is in your tank but my tank does that. It will turn whitish with green for a week or two then turn that purplish pink.

Just my $.02 watch it and see what happens. If doesn't turn into coralline then take corrective action.
