ok my girlfriend got me one and it is still a little guy maybe 2" i got him alone in a 20 gal for now, then i have a 55 gal (african cichlids) and tomorrow i will be buying a 45 gal HEX.

so right now i have the decision of what to do, i could either put the gsp in a 55 gal normal tank and move all the cichlids to my 45 gal acrylic hex tank or put him in the hex. seeing as he swims up and down a lot, i thought it'd be cool to have him in the hex so i can watch from all angles and toss in some LR after he is acclimated.

UNTIL THEN, what should i buy...i only want 1 fish in my fowlr setup and i need to figure out what kind of filter/skimmer i should get for brackish to marine i would like to keep the same equipment.

basically...what are the essentials for a brackish tank, MUST i have a sump? this is the biggest question for me since i will eventually have live rock within the next 6 months. suggestions or anything will help me out a lot ive been researching but its hard to find out what things are required for brackish and marine when i've only been doing FW...

i've read that article a few times before posting i know the majority but just never dealt with sump/protein skimmer SW stuff so i need direction for that

Your puffer will not need to be in SW for a year or 2. At that point, as long as he is alone, a 55g with plenty of live rock, sand & a good skimmer will all you need. If you wish to add a sump, that's all good too.

ok thanks i was always under the impressing you must have a sump if you have a skimmer but i guess not? i figured h'ed be in SW in about 6 months but a year or two is fine just gives me more time to figure it all out

Some good hang on back (HOB) skimmers include:

AquaC Remora and Remora Pro
BakPak

I use both of these. There are others that get good reviews, such as the Coralife SuperSkimmer and others. I'd have a skimmer on a saltwater or heavy brackish tank, not a FW tank (they aren't very effective in FW).

I have used BakPaks on 20 and 55 gallon tanks, will do okay for both. I actually have a dual chamber BakPak on a 29 right now, which I will later use on my 55.
