Green Star Polyp Question

Hey guys you may feel this is a silly question but i am trying to figure out what the problem is. I have a large rock of mature green star polyp and for some reason it recently wont open up. do they sometimes take a brake like leathers sometimes do? I checked all my water parameters and they are fine. the purple flesh on the GSP seem fine but i am just a little concerned. If anyone can tell me what i may look for or what i can do let me know. All responses will be greatly appreciated.

ive had GSP close for 2 weeks, then open up only to be a little faded. its just sorta a phase they go through. dont worry about 'em. they're next to impossible to kill.

I second that they really dont die, mine would close up for a few days here and there, you can always try and blow them off with a turkey baster, sometimes sand or detirs can build up on them.

Does this coral sometimes have a growth spurt. Mine had been a seemingly slow grower and recently it just exploded and start spreading very nicely.

None of my parms have changed, except I have been doing trimming of other corals.

IMO, GSP are one of the fastest growing corals. right behind xenia. they've always grown fast for me, to the point where i was throwing handfuls in the garbage. just be careful, because their growth can be problematic.

Constantine,

Interesting that you mentioned Xenia. Mine has been growing so fast, that I too am tempted to just get rid of all of it.

be lucky there doing good now. they normally take a turn for the worse out of nowhere. mine used to take off, take over, then just randomly die off completley. a lot of people seem to have this problem.

my xenia too have overgrown 2 time snow and died off to half of what it was. but they are still pumpin away now. Xenia are great to let you know there is a problem with your water quality since they are so sensitive.

I dont have gsp anymore, but when I did they used to grow like crazy so I would usually try and keep them on a rock that wasnt touching other ones. My xenia used to grow fast too, and some people use it in there fuges or sumps as a means of nutirent export.

On a side note, xenia is usallly very hardy, and the main reason for their decline is usually idiodine, when I kept my pom pom I used to dose iodine and it used to keep them very healthy.
Of course other parameters can affect it, but usually when its sudden its a decrease in iodine.

not really. ive seen xenia die off in numerous systems where nothing was changed everything else was thriving. i had a full blown sps tank and the only thing that i couldn't keep was xenia. water was always spot on.

we couldn't keep it at SCFR either and our water was always great there too.

ive always been weary of dosing iodine. IMO, its not worth it to overdose the whole tank in hopes to keep some xenia alive. especially when i had a good amount of shrimp in my tank as well.
