i just got a small colony of polyps do i need to attach them to a rock or set them in place and they will grow--attach themselves?

I would attach them with a little super glue gel. Works great. Make sure you attach it to a rock that can be easily removed when it comes time to frag.

It was not fully opened in this pic. When fully opened, I don't see any of the little white stars.

I always attach it with a rubber band and then remove the band after a week or two.

Sea Mat is a general term for this type of polyp. The purple 'mat' from which they come from. The pic is rather small, but looks like gsp to me.

I used a rubberband on a piece I cut from the GSPs I'm trying to contain now to start a colony in another tank and it works well. Did it again this morning on two more pieces to grow on rocks on the sand bed.
