green star polyps

we changed our light to a metal halide light (cant remember what it used to be)

before we did this our star polyps were flat like you see in the pics
now with the new light they stand straight up

are they "eating"? are they upset? should they be flat most of the time? it looks fine and i think every polyp comes out (more so than with the other light) im curious as to what this means

If you aren't already, you may want to acclimate your tank to the new lighting by only using the halides for say, an hour each day at first. Then slowly increase to the desired amount. Another option would be to put them farther away from the tank and lower them over time.

I've seen GSP (and other corals) do many unexplained things. Sometimes "reaching up" is a sign of not enough light, but other times they are getting the perfect amount and it is some other factor. If they are just coming out more and you have more light, you should be ok. Just be careful on how much more light you're giving them.

For the most part, I think you only need to be worried if they are not coming out for a few days or more.

they are always out...and if i have to move them for whatever reason they come out fairly quickly
and like i said
more have come out since we added the metal halide light. there werent this many out before

the photo period was shortened even before we changed the lights because of algea

i asked if they were eating because before we got the halides they would reach up whenever food was added to the tank
i dont know if this is the same nor not
