grounding probes

Goundig probes are used to eliminate the possibility of stray voltage to enter the tank and ultimately effecting the livestock. Be it through your powerheads and even the lighting system to mention a few. The best way to think of it is a bird landing on a powerline, the pole is grounded to the earth whereas, if there is no grounding ptobe in a tank the voltage has no place to go and the tank itself acts as a ground.
The probes themselves are relatively cheap ($20+-) for the protection of your inhabitants and most importantly whomever puts their hands in the tanks water. I hope this helps and Welcome to Reef Central. Tinman

the grounding probe is for us......as if there is juice in the tank it will go thru grounding probe instead of us. and the livestock will know if there is juice in tank as the probe is the ground for the "bird on the wire"

without grounding probe, the livestock will not know if you drop end of extension cord in tank (not recomended). because they are the "bird on the wire" and are not grounded. without grounding probe in tank and juice in the tank it is possible for "us" to get elctrocuted when we put our hands in tank(as we become the grounding probe).

of course we all should have GFI's everywhere there is something plugged in that is in water and our lights.

when it comes to power lines the lines are insulated from the pole and do not touch any ground....or we would never get any power to our fish tanks :0)
