For you ORCA club members, this is the exact same meter we have used at some of the meetings to test members lights.
You would be surprised how much the par drops off as you check various spots in the tank.
As "closet wannabe scientists" we enjoy the scientific aspects of this hobby. Wish we had something this interesting as this hobby when we were in school - we might have chosen different professions.
We also use the meter to help determine when it's time to change bulbs. The theory here is that it will help "save money" on unnecessary bulb changes

So of course, over time, it would pay for itself
We had the opportunity to visit with Sanjay Joshay about what would be the ideal light meter for home use, something that works well and is affordable. This is the same setup he recommended. (For those who don't know who he is - check out the lighting forum on Reef Central for his studies on metal halide lighting.)
