Growing Cheato with LED's?

MeuserReef

Welcome to the next level
Just curious if anyone is using LED lighting to grow chaetomorpha.

I found a 14 watt LED grow light that I may try to use above a chaeto chamber in my sump.

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions?

I dont have the kelvin rating, but I do know that there are 225 LED's, 60 being between 460nm and 470nm and the remaining 165 LED's are between 645nm and 655nm.

The unit Im looking at is for growing plants, so I would guess that with all of the Red LED's, the unit is probably less than 10K

I have a 14watt grow lite that I bought on amazon.com running above my sump. It is the kind with maybe, 40 bulbs, something like that. There are red and blue LED's.

Its only been about a week, but my chaeto looks o.k, the grape caulerpa is about toast. It must not have liked the transition from old tank to new. I will post back in a week and let you know if its better or worse, right now, its still too early to tell.

I bought a all white LED from Sam's club that said It's equal to 15W and It has been growing my Cheato for several months since the switch from a 65K Spotlight type CF bulb In a shop light. Works great so far.

I started with a 6.9 watt LED (general use) in my fuge and I just came back from a month in Thailand and the Macro algae was dead and gone :( I just purchased a 21 watt PAR 38 bulb from nano customs to ensure I have the appropriate light for the macro. I hope to get it next week and restock the fuge. I had a feeling the 6.9 wouldn't be bright enough but you never know until you try!

My 14 watt growlight from amazon has done quite well. My chaeto has grown well under it. It has large red and blue led's in it. With a par meter, it put out 45 par at a distance of about 8". Moving closer actually dropped the par level.

What do we think about the all blue LED plant grow lights from Ebay? I've got one of these laying around and I'm wondering about it. The blue LEDs are supposedly in the 460nm range. I've been wondering about this for a while.

the only 14k PAR 38 bulb i know of is the Evil 66 PAR 38 that is sold on Nanotuners.

LEDs are great for growing plants, nice descrete-frequency emitters. Those less expensive 5000k-6500k grow lights make great sump lights too. The right combo of LEDs is even better for some corals. My zoanthids love them.
