I think most use 6000-6500k but that might work. There's a lot of good websites about culturing phytoplankton so I would just follow those guides

I grow phyto all the time. I just use a normal bulb. The one you bought will work also. Not sure how you are growing it but I use old two liter bottles with an air line through the lid. Easiest thing in the world to grow.
