Growing Phytoplankton

try leaving the crashed culture alone for a bit longer it may green up. I once crashed a culture and got a little lazy so i left it in my culture station and a month later it came back.......i really have no idea how and why it took a month but it did come back. As far as your fertilizer it takes next to nothing so i wouldnt add more. I would leave your pumps the way you have them, you dont want one pump running rots and phyto. Thats a easy way to get a crashed cultuer. Just be patient on the other bottle it doesnt look too bad, it may just be takeing off slower.

How much of your culures do you guys feed to your tanks (ml/gal) and how often? This looks like something that would be a good idea to get into.

I dose about 2 cups every other day in my 180 for over a year now.

I would suggest watching this video. It's very informative and shows you how to properly culture phyto as well as some troubleshooting tips on what to do if your culture crashes. There is also a video on rotifer cultures that is very good.

What if the pump has two different exit-holes for the air - as with the eheim200 I use, would you still think there is a risk? and how do you add the phyto to your tank - don't you also add phosphate, nitrate etc if you simply ad some of your phyto culture do you spin down the phyto and pour the water of?

@xjake thanks for the video, it had some good info - I think I'll change my setup to glasses also ;)

You can try the one pump with 2 holes but i think its best to seperate everything due to potential contamination. I strain my phyto when i split the culture and leave it alone. I add a cup every other day to my 180. In my opinion you dont add any more phosphate to your tank with the live phyto then you do feeding flake food. Again thats my opinion. I dont know about the nitrate but i dont think you have to worry about nitrate with phyto.

Good, though I'm actually checking RC from sunny California (Hollywood). :smokin:

Thought I'd share an interesting experience that is on-topic. After some research I decided to setup a culturing station to culture microalgae (3 genera), rotifers and brine napuli. I found that Florida Aqua Farms website was down so I went to Aquatic Eco Systems. I placed an order for the 3 cultures, the rotifer cysts and a few pieces of rigid airline tubing. A few days later they emailed me to give me my 'freight quote'...

$86.21

Incredulous, I asked them if it was a mistake. She explaine to me it had to ship overnight cause of the cultures. 3 petri dishes that weigh under a pound from FL to MA for over $86. I think they need to put the pipe down.

Wow! I think I would wait until FAF's site is back online. I do not believe they need to ship their cultures "overnight" as they last for a long time in the petri dishes.

Keep me posted. :)

Make sure you tell them no thanks and you are going to FAF site because of there ridiculous shipping, alot of people mark up shipping to make extra, which is bull.

I placed my order (actually a larger order (more dry goods) with FAF. Total shipping: $16. Oh yea, I made sure Aquatic Eco Systems knew exactly what I thought. I also related my experience to FAF and learned that Aquatic Eco Systems is actually reselling FAF's cultures. I agree, some vendors are just thieves which is why I wanted to 'out' them.
