Growth on hermit crab shell

One of my hermit crabs has things growing on its shell. Could they be hydroids? If so, should the crab be removed? Anyone know how to persuade a hermit to move out of his shell?

Just give it a few empty shells slightly bigger. They're always house hunting for a new home.

It really depends on what the growth is. The photo is too blurry for me to know what it is. If you could take it out, place it in a dish with water & then photograph for a clearer shot that would be helpful.
