Growth Test

I came upon some interesting observations and wanted to know if anyone else has observed what I have. I have taken zoos that were 'reaching' for light (light starved) and placed them higher in the tank where they get more light. The polyps slowly shrink down and then the growth seems to explode.

Is it possible that the extra cells required for them to 'stretch' for the light become growth cells when the zoos are placed in higher light and shrink back down?

Has anyone else seen this or experimented with it? I am going to try and develop a strategic testing plan with my zoos to see if in fact this makes a big difference.

Sounds cool. More light almost always means more growth in zoos. Most love light. The same thing happend with my xenia. I move some from a tank with PC lights to a tank with t-5's and they dont strech anymore, plus im already seeing new growth!!

Yes, more light definitley means more growth...but I have observed even more growth with this method.

Interesting find. Have you taken the same zoa with two frags and the same amount of polyps to test this? IE: same zoa... leave one high in the tank... put the other low until it gets "light starved" then move it high...and then finally calculate the outcome?

To me that would be the best controlled test you can do. If the light starved one puts on more polyps within X time, then you could probably call this a factual finding.

When people have an observation such as this, I wish they (including myself) would take the time to fully test it in a more scientific way and actually prove their observation to be fact. Almost everything is plausible, but tests will prove it. Ala Myth Buster style!

keep us posted.. and hope you document it with pics.. :)

I will be laying out a plan of attack with differnt types as well. I have not tested this yet. It was just an observation on my part.

I will keep you posted through this thread. It is going to take some time to do a controlled study.
